Happy New Year!
The start of the 2008 General Assembly
is just days away! Now is the time to drop my your Delegate and Senator's
offices in your voting district and share with them the many exciting things
happening in your school division in Career and Technical Education. Also,
make an appointment to see them on January 18 during the VACTE Professional
Development Seminar.
Also, discuss the Governor's proposed
budget. The proposed budget shows cuts to the CTE equipment funding and no
funds for the CTE Resource Center. The Governor is very supportive of CTE and
the thinking is this has been an oversight and will be reinstated. On the CTE
equipment funding, as you recall, it took several years to get an increase in
that funding category. At one time, only $700,000 was allocated to school
divisions for CTE equipment. Through working with legislators and over the
past few years, that amount has increased to over 1.5 million.
The CTE Resource Center is a crucial
component to CTE in Virginia.
The
Center provides career and technical education curriculum and resource
instructional materials free of charge to all local school divisions in the
commonwealth. The state funding replaces federal funding that is no longer
available for the continued operation of the Center.
Members of the
House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Finance Committee are holding
hearings throughout the state on the proposed budget. The hearings are
scheduled at four locations for January 3, 12:00 noon at Southwest Virginia
Community College, George Mason University, Tidewater Community College, and
Campbell County Office Building.
Please remember the VACTE Professional Development
Conference is January 17-18, Crowne Plaza,
Richmond. We look forward to seeing you there!
